Zoom based CPD support for teachers of A-Level Sociology

Only £75 per teacher for a six Zoom session course, or £50 for a four session course. * additional teachers 50% cost

Four Zoom-based CPD courses in the Summer term of 2021 & repeated in September 2021. See below for start dates. The courses focus on the AQA A level Sociology specification.

Course materials will be provided for each session leading to a comprehensive coverage of the way A level Sociology (AQA) is taught and assessed. All materials are also designed to be used with students.

The Media (AQA Specification)

Course Tutor: David O’Leary
When: June & September 2021

These sessions will cover:

  • Deconstructing 20-mark essay questions; Ownership and Control / News / Representations
  • Deconstructing 20-mark essay questions; New media / Globalisation / Audiences
  • The 10-mark ‘Outline and Explain’ question; how to identify and apply the links between topics and structuring responses
  • The 10-mark ‘Apply’ question; using the ‘hooks’ and structuring responses
  • How to move from a B grade to an A*; how to upskill your students
  • Revision strategies and approaches to assessment and student feedback

All sessions will include guidance on assessments and/or marking exercises

Attendees will be invited to raise any further matters of concern.

Sessions will run once a week in the evening.

Cost: £75 (Additional teachers 50% of cost).

Delivering Education topic (AQA) using current research & examiner insights

When: June & September 2021

Four session course will cover:

  • Differential Educational Achievement: Class and Ethnicity
  • Differential Educational Achievement: Gender
  • Pupil identities
  • Education policy & theories of Education

A course of 4 sessions @ £50 per teacher (additional teachers from the same school £25)

The course includes:

  • Materials which can be used with students
  • Summaries of up-to-date research
  • Focused on essay skills/types of essay questions
  • Includes scaffolding and model frameworks
  • Identifying common errors in essays
  • Guidance on how to avoid these errors
  • Specimen opening, closing and ‘methodological paragraphs’

Sessions will run once a week in the evening.

Cost: £50 (Additional teachers 50% of cost).

Teaching Theory and Methods (AQA Paper 3)

When: June & September 2021

Four session course covering:

  • Sociological Theory
  • Research methods
  • Methodological Issues
  • Dealing with 10 mark questions

A course of 4 sessions @ £50 per teacher (additional teachers from the same school £25)

The course includes:

  • Materials which can be used with students
  • Identifying common errors in essays
  • Focused on essay skills/types of essay questions
  • Essay frameworks
  • Specimen opening, closing and ‘methodological paragraphs’
  • Issues with 10 mark questions
  • Includes scaffolding and model frameworks

Sessions will run once a week in the evening.

Cost: £50 (Additional teachers 50% of cost).

Understanding Assessment (AQA Specification)

Course Tutor: Keith Trobe
When: June & September 2021

Six session course covering:

  • Issues with 10 mark questions
  • The Method in the Context of Education question
  • Deconstructing essay questions; different types of paragraph in A level essays (opening, closing, main and methodology paragraphs)
  • 30 mark essays in Education and in Crime and Deviance
  • A mix-up session covering small-mark questions; understanding AO1, A02 and A03 skills; using marking exercises; embedding skills in revision.
  • 20 mark Theory and Methods essays

Attendees will be invited to raise any further issues of concern.

Sessions will run once a week in the evening.

Cost: £75 (Additional teachers 50% of cost).
