CPD A level (AQA) SOCIOLOGY SPRING 2018

DELIVERING A LEVEL SOCIOLOGY (AQA)

2018 Dates

London         Friday January 19th

Birmingham            Thursday January 18th

This CPD aims to help teachers prepare their students more effectively for the challenges of the new A level specification. It will focus on A level Sociology (AQA spec) looking at the challenges of A level essay-writing, the new 10 mark questions, how the MIC question will be marked (somewhat differently to in the past), and revising topics delivered in the first year of the course.

KEITH TROBE is a hugely experienced teacher, writer and examiner of AS and A level Sociology. A recent Principal Examiner and co-author of the main textbooks used in schools and colleges, Keith will use his experience to analyse the content and assessment in the new AQA Sociology specification (AQA). Keith is also the owner of Lindisfarne Press.

We can also bring this CPD into school consortia, local authorities and academy chains. Email us for details.

The sessions will be essentially practical and each participant will leave with a pack of materials that can be used with students and colleagues. This will include briefing sheets, worked examples of answers and guides to the new specification.

Programme

Session 1  Lessons from the first years of the new specification

Keith will initiate a discussion of the concerns teachers and students have about the new-style A level Sociology specification. This will be an opportunity to find out that your concerns are shared (!) and to discuss and share experiences.

Session 2 The 10 mark questions

Anyone following social media in the aftermath of this summer’s first AS exams will have seen the concerns raised by teachers (and students) about the new 10 mark questions. Keith will deconstruct the two 10 mark question formats used in both AS and A level exams. This will be illustrated with worked examples of answers.

Session 3 Writing effective A level standard essays

Keith has been producing materials on writing effective A level essays for twenty years. He will use this experience to demonstrate how to raise the quality of essays. There will be worked examples with commentaries, but this will go beyond simple marking exercises.

Session 4 Returning to first year topics at the end of the course

It’s been a long time since we had a linear course in which students have to return to and revise topics covered at the beginning of the course. Keith will outline some ways to make revising topics taught earlier in the course more effective.

Session 5 The ‘method in context’ question

This question currently continues to cause candidates problems and is being marked somewhat differently. Keith will offer guidance, formats and examples to help students to maximise marks on this question.
